                                             Name  ______________________________

DRESS THE PART!!

The clothing that someone wore in the 18th century was very important.  What you wore showed your status in society.   People knew how important  (or unimportant) you were by the clothes you wore.

Go to this website

http://www.history.org/History/teaching/dayInTheLife/webactivities/dress/dress.cfm

You need to dress a person (either female or male) from each of the 6 social positions:  field slaves, household slaves, free blacks, farmers, middling, gentry.

Dress a woman colonist on this website

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/colonialhouse/history/dress_up_flash.html

Follow the directions on the website on what you need to do.

After you have dressed  ALL 6 persons of each social status,  write at least ½ page on what you learned.

Include information on how people dressed in the 18th century is different than now, and also whether you think that it is easier or harder to tell what position someone is in society (rich or poor) now than someone in the 18th century.

Also, include your opinion on what is better.  Has the style of our clothing improved our culture?
